Description
Ellen Mary Maria (Nellie) Eaton - Original 1880 Watercolour. Dated lower right. Unsigned. Discolouration and paper remnants around the outer edge of the image. From a collection we acquired by Ellen Mary Maria Eaton (1866-1949). Known as Nellie Eaton, she was born in Chelsea, London to Henry Eaton, a chief clerk in insurance, and his wife Mary Maria Bayly. After the death of her father in 1874 she lived with her mother in Kensington, until her mother’s death in 1907, when she moved to Watmer Hall near Canterbury, Kent. She was an acknowledged amateur artist, having a fine command in pen and ink and watercolour. She exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and was a member and regular exhibitor at Ipswich Art Club 1919 until her death. She died at her home in Kent in 1949, aged 83. Her last wishes were that her capital assets should be used to benefit artists, nurses and gentlewomen and after her death. Most of her properties were sold and, in 1954, the Eaton Fund for Artists, Nurses and Gentlewomen became a registered charity, with the aim of giving comfort and support to people in these groups. Our collection includes many views around the south east of England, including Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, East Sussex, Kent. A number are signed or monogrammed and some are dated, variously between 1896 and 1934.Size
