Artist Biography
Elise Ashe Lord was a printmaker and painter who exhibited extensively during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Born Elise Müller, she claimed to have married at 18 having been born in 1900, this may well have been a ruse to hide her German origins. Public records prove otherwise. She studied at Heatherley's circa 1913 and her subject matter, often influenced by the Orient, included figures and flower pieces. She showed her work at the Royal Academy, RBSA, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Lefevre Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Fine Art Society and at numerous other London and provincial galleries. She also illustrated a version of the Arabian Knights and examples of her work are in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Studio Magazine published a book on her in 1927 called Elyse Lord, 'Master of the Colour Print'.
In 1918 she married a Reverend Ashe and on occasion, she did sign her work Elyse Ashe Lord. The pretty coloured drypoints which expressed the Oriental fantasies of Elyse Lord seem contrived to decorate the dream world of milady's boudoir of yesteryear. Despite the strong Oriental influence in her work Lord never visited China or Japan and she was so able to preserve her purely personal vision intact. Lord held her first important solo exhibition of 70 drawings at the Brook Street Gallery in 1921 and in the following year was elected RI and was also a member of the Society of Graver-Printmakers in Colour. A watercolour painting by her entitled 'The Red Shawl' is illustrated in Colour Magazine, February 1919.
