Artist Biography
Edwin Aaron Penley was a British watercolour painter. He was the son of William Henry Saulez/Sawley Penley (1793-866), a drawing master at Reading, and nephew of Aaron Edwin Penley (q.v.) landscape painter with who he is sometimes confused with.
He exhibited three watercolours at the Suffolk Fine Arts Association at Ipswich in 1850 and exhibited eleven works at the Royal Society of British Artists in Suffolk Street between 1853 and 1872.
In 1853 he was married at St John's Church, Notting-Hill, London to 17 year old Eliza Willson who died the following year. By 1858 he was recorded to be living in Tasmania but in 1861 he was back in the UK, working from 3 Wellington Street, Cheltenham.
In 1881 is is recorded as a 51-year-old 'landscape artist in watercolour' living in Lambeth, London. He married for a second time in Surrey in 1886 to Eliza Chandler. Edwin Aaron Penley died at 28 Sidney Road, Richmond and was buried at St Mary Magdalene, Richmond on 9 February 1893, his age given as 67.
