Artist Biography
Edward William Sharland (1884-1967) was a prolific and competent etcher who was born in Bristol and apprenticed to follow his father's trade of cabinet-making. Indeed the 1911 census lists him as a 'wood turner'. He worked for a time as a carver, decorating the furniture for a joinery company in Bitton, but he later seems to have earned his living as an artist. He also painted in oils and was said to be self-taught. Topographical etchings of Bristol by Sharland are recorded from 1909. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, RWA and Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Sharland also experimented with colour etching and Frost & Reed published much of his work in the 1920s and 1930s, including a set of four prints of the University Tower. After living in Portishead for some years he later moved to Truro, Cornwall where he died in 1967. He was a member of the Fine Art Trade Guild. Engravings by Sharland are in the collection of the NRM and the National Trust.
