Artist Biography

Edward Sylvester Hynes was a cartoonist and illustrator, the son of a surgeon, he was born in Burren, County Clare, Ireland. Raised in Nottingham Edward Hynes was a naval cadet and navigator for ten years in the Merchant Navy before studying medicine in Sheffield. His early works were reproduced in 1923 in ‘Town Topics’ but he is best remembered for his cover for Men Only from 1936 which lasted through the war for two decades. His work was also reproduced in the Daily Sketch, Lilliput, Evening News, Humorist, Razzle, Sunday Express, Bystander, London Calling, Strand Magazine, Night and Day and London Opinion. Hynes drew theatrical caricatures for the Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, and worked in advertising, designing for Guinness, J. Lyons, Player's Tobacco, Wrights Coal Tar Shaving Cream and others. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and retired to his birthplace where he died and is buried in Corcomroe Abbey.
