Description

A fine landscape scene with a copse by the artist Edward Strutt, Lord Belper PC FRS (1801-1880), entitled 'Dowdeswell Deer Forest'. The artist has depicted trees, set in a mountainous landscape with peaks in the distance. There is a label from the City of Nottingham Museum & Art Gallery to the reverse, inscribed with the title and signed by the artist 'Belper'. Well-presented in an original 19th Century gilt wooden frame with ribbon moulding, and gilt mount, as shown. Signed and Inscribed on the reverse. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and age toning. There is also minor foxing, and the gilding of the mount has areas of loss to the lower edge. The frame is in good condition, commensurate with its age.

Artist Biography

Edward Strutt, 1st Baron Belper PC FRS (1801-1880) was a British liberal politician, known for serving as the Chancellor of the Dutchy of Lancaster. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Cambridge Union in 1821. Strutt graduated as a Bachelor of Arts in 1823, promoted to Master of Arts three years later. In 1860, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and between 1871 and 1879, he was President of University College, London.
