Edward Stamp (b.1939) - Framed 1974 Watercolour Rural Street Scene

Description

A wonderfully detailed and inviting village scene, captured in watercolour by 20th century artist Edward Stamp. In the foreground a single figure can be seen walking beside a high stone wall in the direction of several houses and the village pub. The artist has used body colour to bring out small details in the street, such as individual brickwork and small roof tiles. The watercolour has been signed by the artist and dated to the lower right edge. Presented in a crisp white mount and gilt coloured frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is a small brown mark down the left-hand edge of the mount and minor discolouration to the watercolour.

Artist Biography

Edward Stamp was evacuated from London during the war to a small farm in Dunton, Buckinghamshire. The countryside had a profound impact on his creativity, and the Buckinghamshire landscape has frequently featured in his work ever since.

He studies at Northampton School of Art, where he gained the National Diploma of Design in 1961. after his studies he worked as a tractor driver and painted and sketched the land he worked. By 1973 his worked gained enough recognition to make being an artist his full time occupation.

In 1980 he was awarded the Bronze Medal for the most outstanding watercolour by a non-member in the annual exhibition of the RI, and was subsequently elected a member in the same year. In 1981 his wood engravings merited his election as a member of the Royal Institute of Painter Etchers and Engravers. His originals are in collections both public and private worldwide.
