Edward Sharland (1884-1967) - Original 1916 Etching. Wove laid on card. Signed and inscribed. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and age toning.

Edward W. Sharland was born in Bristol in 1884 and died at Truro aged 83 in 1967. A Bristol architectural and landscape etcher who exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. He was a full member of the Fine Art Trade Guild. His etchings were exhibited in Liverpool, Bristol and over 57 works at the Royal West of England Academy between 1910 and 1937. Showed three Bristol views at the Royal Academy, London in 1911, 23 & 25. Frost & Reed published a series of his etchings and many pieces of work were published in London by Bell. Several of his etchings were also published in both London and New York by Charles Klackner and some of these are currently to be found with US dealers with prices in the hundreds of dollars. His etchings include scenes of cities in France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Holland as well as of London, Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol. He made a series of large coloured etchings of cathedral interiors and later produced a set of etchings of inns for George's Bristol brewery. Living in Bristol until about 1950 he produced many fine works of the City and Bath. When he moved to Cornwall he made etchings of the little village of Cadgwith at the foot of the Lizard. He was a master of the coloured etching, a much more difficult medium than the monochrome form because of the requirement for precision registration of each subsequent plate with the additional colours. This obviously takes more time and effort and means that the prints cost more to produce and to buy.
