A very fine late 19th Century architectural study of a ruined castle in oil, by the artist Edward S. Bearcroft. Clearly influenced by the picturesque ideals developed throughout the Victorian period, Bearcroft has depicted moated crenellated walls in a balanced manner, with natural elements growing about the walls. The large expanses of stone and brickwork contrast with the soft reflections in the water, and contribution to an even harmonious work. Well-presented in a dark gilt wooden frame with fluted cove and leaf-and-berry running pattern. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
In very good condition for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Some light surface abrasions to the edges of the canvas. The frame is in very good condition, with some minor surface marks to the sides.
