Lancashire born painter of landscapes in oil and watercolours often depicting rivers and lakes. According to the census of 1861, Edward James Du Val was employed as a clerk in a shipping company, before later working as a wine merchant. Du Val later relocated to the south of England living variously at Reigate in Surrey, Marlow, Buckinghamshire and Richmond in Surrey. Duval exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Dudley Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and at the Ridley Art Club. Examples of his work are in the collection Atkinson Art Gallery. His surname is most often written as one word 'DuVal'. However government records clearly state that it was two words, 'Du Val'
