A charming watercolour scene depicting a man reading the Observer over Sunday breakfast. The artist fills the scene with charming details such as a Mocha ware jug and salt box. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame with ornate foliate strapwork. On paper.

Artist Biography

Edward George Hobley (1866-1916) was a painter of landscape and genre pictures born in Oxfordshire. He was apprenticed to a Bradford draper but was drawn to art and attended evening classes at Bradford School of Art. He subsequently gained a scholarship at the National Art Training School (now The Royal College of Art) in London, and went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and at L'École des Beaux-Arts. On his return to England, he taught art at the Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith, and made his home in Cumbria, where he lived until his death. He exhibited work at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Paris Salon, Royal Academy, and Royal Cambrian Academy, who elected him an Associate Member in 1903. In 1906 he was also elected to the Lake Artists Society. Examples of his work are in the collections of Bradford Museums and Galleries, National Museums Liverpool, and Shipley Art Gallery.
