A charming and impressive watercolour study by well listed British artist, Edward Davies RI (1841-1920). The fluid the controlled brushstrokes and subtle layering of tonal depth clearly display Davies' expert handling of the watercolour medium. The artist has perfectly captured the rugged natural beauty of the Isle of Skye area with rocky outcrops towering over sublime waterways.
With a 'Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours' label on the reverse, titled, signed and inscribed by the artist. Well presented in a washline mount and simple gilt frame with an exhibition plaque to the lower edge.
Signed. On watercolour paper.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With light foxing spots and scuffing to the edges of the frame, as shown.

Edward Davies was a landscape artist, born in Houndsditch, London. He joined his father's cigar making business and in the 1860's relocated to Leicester still working as a cigar maker. His art education is as yet unknown but he began to exhibit nationally in 1880 at the Royal Academy of Arts and in 1896 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and later to the British Watercolour Society. Davies also showed at the RBSA, Baillie Gallery, DG, ISSPG, Nottingham Castle Museum, RBA and the ROI. He travelled extensively in England, Scotland and Wales. Several paintings by him are held by Leicester Arts and Museums Service and Leicestershire County Council. He was the father of the lesser-known artist George Edward Davies. Davies lived for over 50 years in Leicester, where he died on 29 August 1920.
