This charming portrait depicts a dreamy-eyed artist in a smock, necktie and cap. The artist uses chiaroscuro to emphasise light and dark within the composition. The light hits the artist's profile, exposing his gentle expression to the viewer while the other side of his face in concealed in shadows. Signed and titled to the lower left - '[artist name] his friend, L. Rawack' in French - which could be referencing Leopold Rawack the Prussian Violinist. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame with a laurel and berry running pattern and lambs tongue moulding. On paper.

Artist Biography
Eduard Hildebrandt was a German artist who travelled extensively throughout his career. Originally a building decorator, he moved to Berlin to study under Wilhelm Krause. In 1942 he finished his studies and set up studio in Paris. However a year late he decided to travel more widely and explored Brazil, America, parts of Asia, Switzerland and Italy. His style developed as he travelled, moving more towards watercolour depictions of atmospheric landscapes.
