Description

A captivating landscape painting by the Belgian artist Edouard Woutermaertens (1819-1897) depicting draft horses resting from their labour of hauling freshly felled timber. The painting has been well presented in a large gilt frame with a flute effect cove. Signed to the lower right. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals minor restoration and retouching to the surface of the oil. The gilt-effect frame is in very good condition with minor scuffs and a chip. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Artist Biography

Edouard Woutermaertens was born 15th August 1819 in Courtrai. The brother of Constant Woutermaertens. He trained for six years with the artist Louis Robbe, an animal painter, at the Courtrai Academy and specialised in the painting of sheep. Woutermaertens was also influenced by the French artist, Constant Troyon. He was a regular exhibitor at the Brussels and Paris Salons. His work can be seen in the museums of Bruges, Courtrai and Hamburg.
