Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this fine 19th century oil by Edmund Marriner Gill (1820-1894). The well listed English artist was especially fond of painting waterfalls, which earned him the nickname “Waterfall Gill". This particular composition dates from the early period of Gill's career, where he has clearly taken influence from his father, Edmund Ward Gill. Gill frequently exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1886. He was greatly influenced by the artist David Cox, whom he met in the 1840's.
In this picturesque river scene, Gill has depicted figures fishing on the bank, as a mother holds her child, with further figures stood before a cottage and a small church visible in the distance. This finely composed scene has all the traditional hallmarks of good English landscape painting. Gill's superb handling of the medium displays his flair for movement and depth within his compositions. Something that he would use in his later works of waterfalls. He was obsessed with achieving a sense of realism within his works, focusing on the various tones of light and shadow.
Gill's work is in the possession of various private and public collections, including the National Trust and Anglesey Abbey.
Finely presented in an ornate gilt frame with scrolling leaf detail and a plaque bearing the artist's name. An original label on the reverse reads 'Cottage Scene on the Margin of a Brook with Figures'.
Signed. On panel.Overall the condition is very good for a picture of this age. With very minor surface marks and dirt. Inspection under UV light reveals minor signs of restoration, mostly visible to the sky at the left hand side. These are very small dabs of overpainting to cover minor areas of paint loss. The restoration work has been completed to a high standard. There are minor areas of restoration to the frame where the moulding has come loose, at the upper right.

Edmund Marriner Gill (1820-1894) was an English landscape painter of considerable talent. He was the son of portrait painter Edmund Ward Gill (1794-1854). There is a small catalogue of their works printed in 1888 in Hereford entitled 'Brief Account of the Gill Family with Catalogue of their Works'. GIll lived in Ludlow and Hereford, however he travelled extensively across the UK capturing views of Wales and Scotland.
