Description

A study of Monnow Bridge, Monmouth. The bridge is the only remaining fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower standing on the bridge. Inscribed in graphite with the location and signed in graphite to the lower right. Inscribed in the plate with the location. On wove laid to card.

There is scattered foxing to the substrate and backing card.

Artist Biography

Edgar James Maybery (1887-1964) was a painter and etcher born in Newport, South Wales. Talented from an early age he attended the South Kensington Schools in London but unusually the 1911 census list him in Newport working as a 'house painter'. By his mid-thirties he was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and also exhibited at Walker Art Gallery and at the RHA. During World War I, Maybery served in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers where he spent much of his spare time sketching, returning to his hometown after the cessation of hostilities. Maybery painted numerous views of South Wales and the West of England, primarily watercolours but is probably best known for his topographical etchings. Oil paintings by him are in the collection of Newport Art Gallery. His death was recorded in Pwllheli.
