Artist Biography

Dutch artist Ed Dukkers (1923-1996) was born in 1923, and trained at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam. In 1946, Willem Sandberg selected him for the exhibition "Ten Young Painters," which aimed to showcase the new impetus in post-war painting. Like many others at the time, Dukkers displayed expressionist tendencies, but he soon found himself pursuing a different course. Despite his connections with artists who founded movements like CoBrA and Vrij Beelden, Dukkers decided to forge his own path. He felt that manifestos and movements would limit his choices. He was interested in literary and surrealist themes, in which death, eroticism, and rituals were closely interwoven.
