Early 20th Century Oil - The Autopsy
Description
An atmospheric and dark oil painting showing the artist Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), seated at a table drawing the flayed arm of the cadaver before him, by the light of a candle that has been embedded in the abdomen of the body. The arms have been suspended from a string that hangs from a beam above. The painting is after the original drawing by Marius Jean Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) (a French sculptor and painter).
The painting is unsigned and presented in a gilt effect frame with swept and pierced rail and corners with acanthus leaf details.
On canvas.Condition
The painting painting has a large amount of high quality restoration. There are several canvas tears of varying sizes that have been restored front and back. There is some discolouration to the varnish, typical for its age. The frame has some areas of restoration and some splitting in the lower and upper left.
