A man turns to look at the viewer as he walks down a narrow alley in this striking early-twentieth-century street scene. The artist employs a loose, expressive style and a dark, atmospheric palette. An inscription to the reverse identifies the location as Stokstraat, a historic street in the Dutch city of Maastricht. The work is indistinctly signed to the lower right and is well presented in a simple dark brown frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
