A beautiful and finely made section of a cuff from a highly decorative kimono, happi or yukata. Butterflies, berries and blossom wind around each other down the vertical panel. The silk thread used has a lustre and catches the light. This piece shows a very fine hand and is a stunning example of traditional Japanese textiles.The gentle colour palette of blues and greys sit well in its gilt bamboo effect frame and blue silk mount. The condition is typical for a textile of this age including some discolouration. There is a considerable amount of watermarking and staining to the substrate and silk mount. The frame has some scuffing to the gilt.
