Early 20th Century Japanese Woodblock - Kabuki Play Diptych

Description

A striking, traditional Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock. The two scenes are set next to each other and cut from the same black. They document two scenes from a kabuki play, showing characters in vibrant, patterned costumes and makeup, enacting dramatic scenes. The images are finished with kanji, narrating the play. The diptych is handsomely presented in a contemporary bamboo style frame with layered grey card mount and glazing. On washi.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a small tear in the lower right corner.
