Description

A delicate and finely detailed early 19th Century study of the HMS Goliath. The HMS Goliath was a 74-gun third-rate French revolution ship of the line in the Royal Navy. HMS Goliath was launched on 19 October 1781 at Deptford Dockyard and was present at the Battle of Cape St Vincent, Battle of the Nile, and Battle of Copenhagen.

The delicate attention to detail with fine brush strokes expertly portrays the ship as it is anchored at sea. This interesting nautical study is most likely from a sketchbook or diary from the time.

Inscribed in the upper margin with the title.

Inscribed. On watermarked laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some extensive discolouration and multiple 1cm tears in the substrate. The substrate is very fragile and has a few lines where the paper has been folded.
