Early 19th Century Stipple Engraving - Apollo And The Muses
Description
A beautiful stipple engraving with aquatint colouring showing the intimate scene of the Greek Muses, adoring the god of music, Apollo. You can recognise the muse Urania (seen holding her celestial orb and staff), Clio (seen holding a lyre), Thalia (seen with her mask of comedy and crook at her feet), Callipe (seen holding a scroll of poetry) and a fifth, unidentified muse. They stare intently at Apollo as he plays his lyre.
The engraving has been presented in a walnut veneer frame with gilt inner window.
On wove.Condition
The frame has typical age cracks to the veneer all the way round, and a small loss to the upper right corner. The engraving has mild discolouration.
