Early 19th Century Pastel - Portrait of a Young Lady in a Blue Lace Bonnet
Description
A very delicate and emotive pastel portrait of a young lady in a blue silk dress, with a lace collar and a blue lace bonnet. The sitter is depicted in a moment of reflection, glancing downward to the right of the picture. The artist evidently has a fine command of the medium, using bright colours to produce fine detail, such as the translucent lace, and presenting the sitter in a flattering light. Pastel enjoyed significant popularity from the 18th and into the 19th Century because of these qualities, and the realistic portrayals that could be produced were valued for their artistic expression. Glazed and handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame, as can be seen in the photographs provided. Unsigned. On wove.Condition
There are some very small spots of debris to the glazing of the picture. There is also a slight crease near the centre of the image in the substrate and a small area of damage to the lower left corner. The frame has some large cracking and areas of paint loss, but this is commensurate with its age. In very good condition overall.
