Description

A finely painted and sensitively observed portrait of a male novelist, dressed in the fashion of the 1820s or 1830s. An inkwell sits on the table behind him alongside a pile of papers tied with a red ribbon. There is a letter adhered verso which names the sitter as James Parque or Payne. Presented in a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Unsigned. On board.

Condition

There is some discolouration to the varnish and some undulation to the board. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of retouching to the left of the subject's face and to the corners of the painting. There are some small marks to the frame.
