Description

A gouache painting providing an elevated view of the three ancient Greek temples at Paestum. From left to right can be seen the Basilica, the Temple of Neptune, and the Temple of Athena, dating from around 550 to 450 BC. Paestum became one of the destinations of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century and was visited by illustrious admirers such as Shelley and Canova. In the foreground, a man can be seen sitting while a couple walks up the hill. To the reverse is a handwritten section of a romantic novel or short story, titled 'Beauty and Expression'. Unsigned. On wove laid to wove.

Condition

There is a horizontal crease and a closed tear to the painting with smaller creases and surface scuffs to the edges. Small tear to the left edge measuring 3.3cm. There is foxing, discolouration, and a small tear to the upper-left corner of the backing wove.
