An arrestingly sober Victorian school portrait in oil by the artist E. Schwarz, depicting a lady in a black dress with high collar and lace frills, possibly in mourning. A single jeweled brooch attracts the viewer's eye, providing a central point around which a distinct stillness abounds. This mood is aided by the subject's drawn back hair, soft pallor and conservative position of her arms, and the front facing view also adds to this a vulnerable quality. A very fine example of the traditional school of portraiture that developed at the close of the 19th Century.
Handsomely presented in a substantial wooden arched gilt slip, which could suffice as a frame, or could be placed into a larger frame as was originally intended. The inscription 'London' below the signature denotes the likely origin of this unknown artist.
