Description

A wonderful etching depicting waterloo bridge in its first state before its replacement in 1930. The artwork has plate lines and is signed in graphite in the bottom right-hand corner.

On Chine-colle laid to wove..

Condition

The Chine-collé has some abrasions and areas of damage, as well as a few areas along the edges where it has lost its adhesion to the wove beneath and wrinkled.

Artist Biography

Etcher born in Great Malvern, Worcestershire the son of Reverend Francis Synge a school inspector. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1878 where he read Classics obtaining an MA in 1885. He became a Land Surveyor in 1901, and while doing so took evening classes in etching at Westminster School of Art, later studying in Paris and Rome. By 1898 Synge was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and showed at Connell & Sons, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Goupil Gallery, London Salon, Paris Salon, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Hibernian Academy, Ridley Art Club, Goupil Gallery, London Salon, and at the Walker Art Gallery. He was the brother of the writer and playwright John Millington Synge and author Margaret B Synge. Edward married artist Freda Molony and died in Byfleet, Surrey. He left 370 etching plates at his death.
