E. Carswell - Mid 19th Century Oil Farmstead
Description
A landscape depicting a rural farmstead amongst trees. Figures stand talking in the foreground, alongside two cart horses drawing a wagon of hay. Presented in a distressed gilt-effect slip. Signed to the lower-right edge. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the varnish and some stable craquelure across the surface. There are two restorations to the canvas just above the centre and at the centre of the left half. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration to the paint layer in these areas and a small area of inpainting to the lower-left edge. There is some bitumen deterioration, primarily to the lower third of the painting. There are some chips and marks to the frame.
