Packed with symbolism, Dutch school floral paintings and similar compositions have remained popular ever since their debut in 17th Century Holland. This study depicts white tulips, feathered with red that were once some of the most expensive, sought after Tulip breeds during the Netherland's 'Tulip Mania' period. Their presence, along with the drooping flowers to the bottom half of the painting depicts the frivolity of material possessions, showing how beauty is only fleeting.
Other details such as the wheat symbolises immortality and Christ. Carnations famously represent resurrection and eternal life.
