A finely painted 18th century Dutch School oil on panel depicting a bearded scholar in a red cap reading. The use of the chiaroscuro technique provides clear tonal contrasts, and conveys the sense that the scholar is reading under candlelight. The painting is beautifully presented in a gilt frame with a red velvet slip. Unsigned. On panel.
Condition
There are two small spots of surface dirt on the figure's beard. Inspection under UV light reveals two small areas of restoration to the top left and top right corners. The area to the top left which has been restored shows signs of craqueluree. Overall the paint is stable.
