Description

A fine 17th-century maritime painting in the Dutch Golden Age style. The composition depicts a bustling harbour scene with numerous merchant ships scattered across calm waters, their sails catching the gentle breeze under a luminous, cloud-filled sky. Maritime trade and naval power were important and popular subject matter for many artists during the 17th century. This painting has been beautifully presented in a large gilt-effect frame with C-scrolling foliate to the profile. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for an artwork of this age. The painting has undergone previous restoration and retouching. The canvas has been relined to the reverse and areas of craquelure have been stabilised. The surface of the painting has been recently cleaned. The gilt effect frame shows signs of wear, including small chips, stable cracking and light rubbing on all sides. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
