An atmospheric oil painting by Dutch artist Dorus Arts (1901-1961). A humble farm sits within a marshy, snow-laden landscape. The composition is dominated, however, by an expansive brooding sky. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a dark wooden frame with carved foliate ornamentation. On board.

Condition

Overall in good condition. Slight discolouration and surface dirt. Some small scuffs to the surface. Warping to the board. Light wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

Theodorus Johannes 'Dorus' Arts (1901-1961) was born in Bergharen in the Netherlands. He is considered a late follower of the Hague school, both in terms of his impressionistic style and choice of subject matter. Arts became a member of the Nijmegen Society of Visual Artists. Through this circle, he met other painters and exhibited in the Waag building. He later emigrated to Canada.
