Dorothy Southern - 20th Century Oil Cherry Pips

Description

A delightful still life study of two bowls, one full of cherries and the other with the pips places on a patterned surface. Signed to the lower right. Presented in a wooden box frame. A label to the reverse reads 'Invited by Alfred Daniels'. This piece was shown in the annual Mall Galleries RBA exhibition. The prolific 20th century artist who was often referred to as the 'Lowry for Londoners'. He exhibited regularly at the Mall Gallery annual RBA exhibition and most likely enabled Southern's inclusion in the show. On board.

There are some minor scratches to the surface of the painting. Some light wear to the wooden frame.

Artist Biography

Dorothy Southern was an artist from the North East of England who married fellow artist Trevor Frankland RBA in 1957, after the two met in their teenage years.

In 1969, Trevor and Dorothy took the first of many trips abroad, travelling through the Middle East and North Africa and beyond to Afghanistan and Iran, Pakistan and India. The many Islamic and Persian motifs and patterns evident in her work are a testament to the influence of her extensive travels.
