With her sister, she travelled to Paris in 1904 to further her studies, and within two years she was exhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 1910, she moved to South Africa, where she married Hobart Kay, a surgeon. She was active in East African artistic circles and continued to send work to the Royal Hibernian Academy, British Empire Exhibition, Royal Society of British Artists, and also to Jamaica, Canada and Australia. Dorothy Kay was also a prolific illustrator for local magazines. She died in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 1964, and a retrospective exhibition was held the following year at Pretoria Art Gallery.
