Artist Biography

Dorothy Halliday was a painter and writer born in Dunfermline, Fifeshire. She was educated at James Gillespie's High School for Girls in Edinburgh and her time there overlapped with Muriel Spark, who later wrote The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie about the same school.

She then studied at the Edinburgh College of Art, followed by the Glasgow School of Art. Her early career, 1940-55 was in the civil service and during World War II she held the post of assistant press officer for various government departments in Edinburgh. Soon after she married Alastair Dunnett who was later knighted for his services to journalism and Scottish life.

During the 1950’s she worked at her art becoming a noted portrait painter, exhibiting often at the Royal Scottish Academy. Her career as an author began in the late 1950’s with her now famous historical fiction novels. She later wrote lighter detective novels. In 1992 she was awarded the OBE for services to literature. With her husband she was instrumental in the development of the Edinburgh Festival and involved behind the scenes in many other important areas such as Scottish Opera.
