Artist Biography

Dorothea Buxton-Hyde Bio: Dorothea Buxton-Hyde is one of the countries leading artists with her work exhibited amongst some of the finest private collections around the world. Her love of painting is as strong today as it was when she first began to show her talent at the tender age of five.

Her earlier works demonstrated a remarkable understanding for perspective, light and shade for one so young. This natural talent was developed amongst the potteries of her native Staffordshire where she began her career by painting on porcelain. Dorothea's work has always reflected the beauty of the world around her and it was a move to North Wales and its wonderful mountain lakes and panoramic scenery that prompted a shift in emphasis away from the heavy horses and farmland scenes that had dominated her thoughts in Staffordshire.

It was in North Wales that Dorothea first exhibited her work which quickly became known and loved. This early success led to several further exhibitions; her career had really taken off. It was not until her early thirties, however, when she started to experiment with egg tempera and watercolours that her style took on the meticulous detail for which she is so widely respected today.

The broad appeal of her work is undoubtedly due to its outstanding quality and attention to detail but it also exhibits something more intangible. Her wildlife studies are so faithful to the original subject that they seem to capture its very essence and bring it alive with movement and vitality.

Such understanding is born of a deep respect and admiration for her subjects; from owls to blue-tits and from otters to snow leopards, Dorothea has studied them in their natural environments and learnt to recreate the image to perfection.

For someone with such a commitment to the natural world, it is not surprising that Dorothea is a passionate supporter of wildlife conservation and, in particular, 'Care for the Wild' - a society which worlds exclusively to prevent suffering and protect wildlife from exploitation.

In 1990 Dorothea set up Ambre Roche Publications, a highly successful initiative which has allowed her to make her works more widely accessible through the publication of very high quality limited edition prints. These can now be found in most leading galleries around the United Kingdom.
