A delightful etching of Fort McHenry in Baltimore it is most well known for its role in the War of 1812, when it successfully defended Baltimore Harbour from an attack by the British navy from the Chesapeake Bay on September 13–14, 1814. Signed to the lower right and with a print number of 178/300 inscribed to the lower left. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing.

Artist Biography

Samuel Donovan Swann (1889-1954) was born in Florida in 1990 and studied in Rome and Munich before returning to America where he resided in Baltimore. Much of his work is in permanent collection of the U.S. Naval Museum, The Smithsonian, The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as many notable private collections.
