Derek Hirst - Large Original 1975 Digital Print. Signed in pencil lower right. Exhibition proof on card. The image was later produced as a 35 edition screen print. 'ea' blind stamp. Signed and dated. Some minor creasing with one closed tear that extends 4cm into the left side of the image and two further tears to the sides of the card.Derek Hirst (1930 - 2006) was born in Doncaster, which was also where he went to art school at the age of 16. He gained admission to the Royal College of Art painting school in 1948 and studied under the English artist John Minton. Hirst's work has been widely exhibited internationally and has exhibited with Tooth's and Angela Flowers Gallery. His first show at Flowers' Lisle Street gallery in 1970 was an instant success. It consisted of seven armchair paintings and was acclaimed by important critics, among them Peter Fuller and Norbert Lynton. His career was interrupted in 1976 when he was diagnosed with cancer and told that he had only weeks left to live. Experiencing surgery and this closeness to death created an eight year hiatus in his career as well as a new lease of work when he recovered from the illness.For more information please click here.
