Artist Biography

Denys George Wells RBA (1881-1973) was a painter. He was born in Bedford and attended the Slade from 1897-1903 where his tutors included Wilson Steer and Henry Tonks. He furthered his studies by spending two years in Montmartre, Paris. On his return to Britain, he was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1906. A prolific exhibitor (he was still painting just before his death aged 92) Wells showed at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Leicester Galleries, London Salon, New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, and Royal Institute of Oil Painters. During the First World War he joined the Artists' Rifles and was commissioned as an officer and during the Second World War, too old for the army, he served as a full-time air raid warden and was awarded the British Empire Medal for gallantry. Much of his work at this time depicted London bomb damage and is housed in the Imperial War Museum. His commissions included one from Queen Mary for the 'Queen's Dolls' House' at Windsor Castle. In 1972 he held a retrospective exhibition at the Mall Galleries and also showed at Bradford Art Gallery and Brighton Art Gallery and was twice awarded the de Laszlo Medal. Wells has work in the collections of Gallery Oldham, Guildhall Art Gallery, Museum of London, Southwark Culture and Heritage Services, and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. Wells showed at the Ridley Art Society and acted as President 1966-67.
