A remarkable eighteenth-century crayon manner engraving by Gilles Antoine Demarteau (1722-1776) after a drawing by Jean-Joseph Taillasson (1745-1809) depicting Saint John of the Cross. Well presented in a vintage black frame with a gold inner edge. Unsigned. On paper.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and foxing to the paper. Several stains to the paper, most notably on the hood. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some slight separation to the upper and lower left corners.

Crayon manner engraving is an eighteenth-century intaglio printmaking technique that mimics the grainy texture of chalk or crayon drawings. The technique was pioneered by Gilles Antoine Demarteau (1722-1776), and would form the basis for stipple engraving.
