An accomplished watercolour painting by the listed British artist David Bates (1840-1921). Bates typically worked en plein air for his rural landscapes. This well-balanced composition depicts a Welsh mountain landscape with sheep grazing on the rugged terrain in the foreground. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame. Signed in pencil to the lower left and dated 1883. On paper.

Artist Biography

David Bates (1840-1921) was a painter who, although born in Cambridgeshire, spent most of his life in Malvern, Worcestershire. He first worked c. 1885 at the Royal Worcester Porcelain factory as a designer and painter of floral images, before leaving in the 1890s to devote himself entirely to painting. Examples of his porcelain decorations can be seen in the Royal Worcester Museum collection. He exhibited at the RBA, RA, RBSA, the Grafton Galleries, and the New Society of Painters in Water Colours. Certain similarities exist between his and his son’s work, and they often worked on the same picture, which included many Welsh landscapes. This has created much confusion with the identification of work. He also traveled in Egypt and Switzerland, and examples of his work are in the collection of the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, and the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide. As stated, he was the father of David Noel Bates, who, to avoid confusion, changed his name to David Bates Noel.
