David Addey (b.1933) was a painter of watercolours who trained at the Architectural Association School in London, and from 1958 until 1975 was in private practise in Tunbridge Wells. Since then he has concentrated almost entirely on watercolour painting in the traditional manner. Between 1814 and 1825 the watercolourist and engraver William Daniell published his eight volumes of A Voyage Round Great Britain. These were illustrated with 308 engraved plates depicting the British coastline, its ports and harbours, lighthouses, ships and seafarers. During the 1980s and ’90s Addey retraced Daniell's voyage to record, wherever possible, the same views.
From the late 1970s onwards he has exhibited regularly at David Messum Gallery, Beaconsfield and London, Fry Gallery, the Atlantic Gallery, Washington DC, the Galerie du Port, Honfleur, Martyn Gregory Gallery, London and in Hong Kong and Ireland. In 1986 he was a prize-winner in the 'Future for the Past of the Rural Heritage' international architectural drawing competition, sponsored by the Council of Europe and Wiggins Teape (UK) plc. His interest in marine subjects has since been amplified by increasing attention to landscape painting. He exhibits regularly in the UK and in France and, on a recent visit to Hong Kong he was commissioned to paint many of the historic buildings of old Hong Kong.
