Artist Biography
Daphne Reynolds began her artistic career as a painter, and moved into printmaking in middle age. She contributed hugely to the revival of the mezzotint technique, transforming the traditional 18th century art of mezzotinting as a tool for reproducing portraits and works of art, into a contemporary mode of artistic expression. Daphne was influenced by photography at a young age growing up in Huddersfield, which we can see in her graphic monochrome compositions. Later in life she married Graham Reynolds, who was the Keeper of Prints, Drawings and Paintings at the V&A in London. After the war years, Daphne was able to return to painting and was influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement coming over from America (along with a lot of other British artists of the 1950s). Her move into printmaking came after studying under Anthony Gross at the Slade School of Art in London, and it was Gross who encouraged her to embrace mezzotinting. Her work has been exhibited widely - in 1974 she took part in 'The Mezzotint Rediscovered' at Colnaghi, London, '80 Prints by Modern Masters' at the Angela Flowers Gallery in 1982. She also contributed to the 1983 collection of prints, published as 'A Tribute to Bigit Skiold'. We have numerous prints from this collection available to purchase.
