Description
A fine copy after a moving 1888 painting by Newlyn School artist Frank Bramley (1857-1915). In the scene, a bereft wife, whose husband has failed to return from sea, is consoled by an older woman. Perhaps she too has experienced a similar loss at the hands of the cruel sea. Several details add poignancy to the scene, such as the simple meal which has been laid out on the table in preparation for the fisherman's return, or the open bible, which hints at the consolations of religion. The work is signed to the lower left and is well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas.Condition
Slight discolouration and some light abrasions to the surface. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
