Painter born James Joseph Boydell in Leigh, Lancashire whose father John Boydell was a landscape painter. Nothing is known of his art training but he did exhibit at the Walker Art Gallery, Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists and at the Royal Cambrian Academy of which he was an Associate member. He was also a member of the Liver Sketching Club during the last decade of the 19th century. In 1891, he produced several works which were hung in S. S. Ibex.
