Cranleigh Harper Barton was born on 7 September 1890.
During the period 1924-7 he had pictures in leading London Exhibitions and Galleries. The fact that Queen Mary bought two pictures at one of his two private Bond Street shops gave him much encouragement.
'His first London exhibition opened on 1 June 1926 at the Graham Gallery, 72, New Bond Street, the culmination of two years' solid work towards making a reputation in London and it was a success. He received a nice criticism in The Times:
"At the Graham Gallery, 72, New Bond Street, a young New Zealand artist, Cranleigh Barton, makes a promising first appearance in watercolour. There are signs that Mr Barton is the kind of artist who can well afford to be slight."
