A carefully detailed original 1881 watercolour by the listed British artist Cornelius Pearson (1805-1891). The artist has composed the setting in a typically fine and naturalistic style in the period, with subtle lighting and a light romantic palette. Figures and vessels on the river add scale and definition to the surrounding natural elements, and finely layered brushwork creates distinct depth.
Well-presented in a gilt wooden frame with gilt lined mount, as shown.
Signed and dated. On wove.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. Some light surface discolouration. Minor trapped dirt behind the glazing. Minor scuffing to the frame.

Cornelius Pearson was a landscape and topographical painter and also an engraver. He was born at Boston, Lincolnshire and went to London at an early age, where upon he apprenticed to an engraver. He then began to paint, mainly in watercolour.
Pearson exhibited 145 works at Suffolk Street between 1843 and 1879, 4 at the Royal Academy from 1845 until 1872 and also at the New Watercolour Society and elsewhere. He was one of the oldest members of the Langham Sketching Club. Two of his views of Wales are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
