Claude Grahame Muncaster, RWS RBA ROI SMA (1903-1974)
A keen sailor and Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Claude Muncaster, who until 1923 signed his work Grahame Hall, was among the foremost British marine artists of the 20th century. The son of landscape painter Oliver Hall RA, he first exhibited at the Royal Academy himself at the age of sixteen and his first one-man show was in 1926 at the Fine Art Society. Not exclusively a marine artist, Muncaster also was a successful watercolourist and recorder of the Sussex Downs and its environs, where he grew up. He became a member of the RWS in 1936 and President of the Society of Marine Artists in 1939. He was also the author of several books on painting.
