Claude Montague Hart (1870-1952) was one of seven children of artist Thomas Hart. Monty, as he was known, was born at Landwednack, near The Lizard. He studied painting in Antwerp, and later returned to Cornwall. The Cornish land and seascapes became a recurring subject in his work. He was a great supporter of the Lifeboat Service, and for thirty-nine years was Secretary for the local Lizard rescue boat. His work was sold locally to tourists. His early works were signed Claude M. Hart, whereas later he reverted to just C.M. Hart. His exhibiting records include venues such as the North British Academy, RWA and the Falmouth Art Gallery. His work was also reproduced in The Graphic and he wrote and illustrated a book on Cornwall.
